Disagreement amongst North Leaders over regional devolution agreement
on July 29, 2016, posted in North East categories
Divisions amongst the leaders of North East councils resurfaced at a recent meeting of the North East Combined Authority. Newcastle City Council Leader, Nick Forbes and Northumberland County Council Leader, Grant Davey disagreed with the leaders of other local authorities, arguing that the region’s devolution agreement should be approved as soon as possible. South Tyneside Council Leader, Ian Malcolm and Gateshead Council Leader, Martin Gannon opposed moving forward with the deal before further assurances were received from the new Government over funding. The deal was put before Leaders subject to further reassurances over funding from Government, and approved 5-2, with Councillors Forbes and Davey abstaining.
