Conservative to lead meetings over future of Manchester’s Northern Powerhouse deal

According to the Financial Times, the Conservative leader of Trafford Council, Sean Anstee is due to meet with the Prime Minister, Theresa May’s Joint Chief of Staff, Nick Timothy next month to convince the Government that the proposed Northern Powerhouse plans should go ahead. This comes after signs emerged that Theresa May is considering scaling back on current Northern Powerhouse proposals, championed by the previous Chancellor, George Osborne. An issue of particular concern is whether the significant budgetary responsibility currently proposed to be given to the newly elected position of Metro Mayor will remain in place. The report states that this comes at a time when Manchester’s perceived status as “teacher’s pet” – of being favoured over other city authorities in the north of England in the Government’s devolution proposals – can no longer be taken for granted.
