Sheffield City Region mayor in question

Category: Sheffield City Region

Sir Steve Houghton, Chair of the region’s Combined Authority, has said an elected mayor is “not a done deal”, despite it forming part of the agreement signed in 2015. However, a Government spokesman said that the deal is “absolutely clear” and will involve an elected mayor.

The Sheffield City Region deal has been backed by over 70% of people polled, and could result in £1.3bn extra funding in the region. However, support for an elected mayor is lacking, partly because of the complex geographical make up of Sheffield City Region Combined Authority.
