Three North East councils in discussions with Sajid Javid over smaller Devo deal

After four of the seven North East councils voted against the proposed deal for the region, reports have suggested that Newcastle, Northumberland and North Tyneside are in discussions with the Communities Secretary over a new, smaller, deal.
The Chair of the North East Combined Authority, Paul Watson, has said he will not stand in the way of the new proposed deal. In an interview with the North East Chronicle, Sajid Javid said the existing deal was ‘dead’ because local leaders had voted against it.
After much disquiet over the requirement for an elected mayor, Javid has now said that the three councils in discussions at present may not be a workable ‘economic region’ for a mayor, and hence he was open to negotiation over the requirement.
